Barbarous by Minerva Spencer
“He could be her ruin
Hugh Redvers is supposed to be dead. So the appearance of the sun-bronzed giant with the piratical black eye patch is deeply disturbing to Lady Daphne Davenport. And her instant attraction to the notorious privateer is not only wildly inappropriate for a proper widow but potentially disastrous. Because he is also the man Daphne has secretly cheated of title, lands, and fortune.
She could be his salvation
Daphne Redvers’ distant, untouchable beauty and eminently touchable body are hard enough to resist. But the prim, almost severe, way she looks at him suggests this might be the one woman who can make him forget all the others. His only challenge? Unearthing the enemy who threatens her life . . . and uncovering the secrets in her cool blue eyes.” ~Description from Goodreads
My Review
Let us start with a little background like I do with almost all of my reviews. I have a weak spot for historical romance (people that follow my blog know this) and I’ve been following Minerva Spencer for a few months now. I came across her in one of those Facebook book release parties and heard about Barbarous and just KNEW I had to read it. Pirates. HELLO! My obsession.
There were so many giveaways going on at the time and I entered every single one. No luck. I couldn’t get my hands on Barbarous. I then had this epiphany…. I’ve been reviewing books for a while now, have even done some from Kensington, why not just send an email requesting a copy? What’s the worst that can happen? THERE WAS NO RESPONSE! But a few short days after I sent that email BARBAROUS ARRIVED IN MY MAILBOX! I was so excited I read it straight away (my review is delayed). Here are my thoughts…..
First of all, I want to commend Minerva Spencer on writing older characters!!! This book did not have teens or young 20 somethings. The characters were relatable! (For me at least. I’ll be 30 in January and the Hubs is….. 42? No! 41!!! Thank goodness he doesn’t read my posts). Huge and Daphne were perfect in my opinion. The “Outcast” / unsung heroes that are damaged inside and out. ( Haha.. see what I did there? The series name… Anywhoo…) That’s what we find in this adventurous novel. I read A LOT! and Barbarous really stood out to me as different. The plot was amazing and the background stories for Hugh and Daphne were just flat out awesome. Thank goodness romance novels ALWAYS have a happy ending. Neither of them needed any more drama or heartache. Everything about this book was fun to read and added a fresh feel to regency. I’ll be reading everything Minerva Spencer writes from now on.
Giving this book a 4 out of 5 and totally recommending it to everyone who loves romance novels! I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book in this series, SCANDALOUS, for sure! Luckily for me, I didn’t read these in order and have the first book, DANGEROUS, on my shelf just WAITING for me to finish up with my October TBR.
